Product Description
It's sometimes called a hidden epidemic: One in ten Americans--more than twenty million people, most of them women--has a thyroid disorder. At any given time, millions of people have an undiagnosed thyroid disorder and experience a chronic mental anguish that almost certainly arises from the very same source. Yet many primary-care doctors still don't recognize the importance of the thyroid in mind-body health--and its especially crucial role in women's well-being.
The Thyroid Solution is a must-read for anyone who suffers from a thyroid condition. It's the first mind-body approach to identifying and curing thyroid imbalances. Written by a medical pioneer and leading authority in the field of thyroid research, this groundbreaking book offers Dr. Ridha Arem's practical program for maintaining thyroid health through diet, exercise, and stress control--and through his revolutionary medical plan, which combines two types of hormone treatments with astounding results. Inside you'll discover
- The thyroid basics--what it is, where it is, what it does - How thyroid hormones affect the brain and alter mood, emotions, and behavior leading to brain fog, weight gain, loss of libido, infertility, anxiety, and depression - What tests to ask your doctor to give you--and what they mean - The vital connection between stress and thyroid imbalance - The benefits of antioxidants and essential fatty-acid foods and supplements - How to recognize and cure the deep and lingering effects of a thyroid imbalance
Filled with remarkable patient histories and interviews that document the dramatic results of Dr. Arem's bold new treatments, The Thyroid Solution now gives you and your doctor the tools you need to live a life with peace of mind . . . and body.

Amazon.com Review
One in ten Americans suffers from thyroid dysfunction, yet most don't realize the mental and emotional components of this condition. "This is the first book to explain the hidden suffering that many patients have difficulty expressing and the first book to provide new ways of helping address and heal this suffering," promises author Ridha Arem, M.D., associate professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and chief of endocrinology and metabolism at Ben Taub General Hospital, both in Houston, Texas. This book explains the link between stress and thyroid imbalance; how thyroid imbalance affects your emotions, sex life, and relationships; and how to cope with the effects of this imbalance. Because thyroid problems primarily strike women, a whole section deals with women's health issues, such as infertility, miscarriage, postpartum depression, premenstrual syndrome, and menopause. Another section provides practical tools, such as evaluating lab tests and self-diagnosis techniques, dealing with treatment problems and side effects, and preventing memory lapses and depression. The book covers lifestyle choices that affect thyroid health, such as diet, supplementation, and exercise. Frequent case studies (usually told as first-person narratives), checklists, and questionnaires help to simplify the material and make it easier to check the medical information against your own situation. Each chapter ends with "valuable points to remember," making review easy. If you suffer from thyroid imbalance, or think you might, this book could be a valuable resource. --Joan Price

The Thyroid "Problem" not Solution ( zyglot2 )
I bought this book as a pre-med student who has had issues of my own with thyroid, liver, and digestive problems. I want to open my mind to others' opinions, because knowing as much as you can about other perspectives is much more valuable than which medical school you went to, when it comes to helping people.
Having said that, I think this book addresses all of the problems of a malignant thyroid very thoroughly. It is a very good read if you want to know what the thyroid does, how the T hormones are manufactured, and how to recognize symptoms. Which is why I gave it 2 stars. 1 for having made it through the publishers and onto the book shelves (I mean, how many people can say they've done that? 1 star) and 2, for genuinely helping people to know when they should consider having their thyroid checked. (1 star)
The book itself is misleading, however. The title suggests that the book would contain solutions. This was the problem I had. It was written by an MD, who, bless his heart, does his best to prescribe the right dosages of medication to his patients. He is not trained, however, in holistic health or actually curing diseases. The only "solutions" that he offers are dosage amounts of artificial hormones. Any visit to the doctor would put you on the same path, which makes the book a waste of time if you already know that you have a thyroid problem. Also, nothing was ever mentioned about what will cause and/or lead to thyroid problems. It is well known that your body has the ability to create antibodies that actually attack the thyroid, causing hyperthyroidism, and ultimately leading to autoimmune disease. Certain foods from our diet (which could be eliminated by patients of malignant thyroids) and toxins, have the ability to wreak havoc on the thyroid. But modern medicine is more interested masking problems by inducing man-made drugs than by figuring out what we're doing wrong, and how we can change.
I suppose I wouldn't have given the book such a poor rating if it were titled "The Thyroid Problem". It's not a bad book. It just ain't no solution.

Excellent Self Tests!
This book is extraordinarily helpful in trying to figure out if you may be borderline hypothyroid- If you have problems with losing weight, EVEN WHEN YOU ARE exercising and following a healthy diet, I recommend you read this book!! The self check tests are a wonderful tool through out the book, and even though the book is written by a doctor, it is easy to read and understand. Includes questions and lists to help discussions with your personal doctor. Great book, and I recommend it for anyone struggling to lose weight!

Good Book ( jas84047 )
This is a really good book but I found it a little hard to read and I enjoy reading medical books. I do like that it's entirely about the mental aspect of thryoid disease unlike most other books that just explain all the symptoms in a basic way. This devles into so much about depression and anxiety and the changes relative to your thyroid hormones. I was shocked how much the two relate to each other and was happy to know I'm not crazy...it's my thyroid! :)
